Gardening in February

A dormant plant with snow piled on top of flowers making the shape of a tall hat.
Snow Hats

It is happening. The garden is coming alive. I am so excited to be in the dirt. I can see it all coming together, all the planning and organizing is paying off. Am I ahead of the curve? Yes I would probably say that. I have never had land to myself so I feel like I am finally beginning. Gardening in February is quite exhilarating for me.

So here is what is going on this week.

  1. My lavender is sprouting!

I heard it was hard to sprout but just keeping it evenly moist has been great. I am going to watch a video today to make sure that I am still doing what is best for them post-sprout. I know lavender is dry-tolerant and prefers to not be wet all the time so I am going to find some resources to continue the process.

  1. My pansies are starting to sprout!

Never tried pansies from seed. I am finding it to be fairly easy so far. I might watch a video on that too to make sure I am up to date with what those require as well.

  1. I picked up a bunch of bricks and a lot of dirt.

This is great because I am going for raised beds on most of my plots. The dirt specifically is really exciting to me. I don’t know if you all have seen the prices on dirt lately but for something that the earth is literally covered with, it sure is a precious commodity.

  1. I started laying out the boundaries for each plot in my yard.

This one is particularly satisfying. It is what makes the whole thing feel connected. Starting seeds is a literal start to the garden, but I feel like preparing the beds is the true start to the garden.

  1. Plan for profit.

I guess this isn’t a past week thing, but today I am making a game plan for profit. This looks like going through the seeds and things that I currently have to plan for what I want to sell. Gathering a list of what and how much each would cost.

First week of February, can you believe it? This month, aside from September, is my favorite. Mostly because it is my birth month, but also because it’s kind of the last month of winter. Since I am a goal person, this month my goal is to join a hobby group of some kind. If you are like me, what is your goal for the month?

Red buds of a box-elder maple

The month that the seasons change is a really beautiful sentiment. Helps me to appreciate every moment a little better. I hope you all are able to take some time to appreciate the little things. Like the buds that are beginning to show themselves in the trees. Or how the days are getting longer again.

I hope you have a good day.

Take care,

Jacqueline Marie
