Fall. A new season with new opportunities.
Fall is my favorite season for many reasons. It signals the world to prepare for
rest, to prepare for change. Brilliant colors
of burgundy, yellow, rusty and bright orange cover the ground. The deciduous trees shed their leaves as they prepare for the long winter's sleep. It is so romantic.
This fall marked more than the weather change for me though, it was a milestone in our marriage. My husband and I moved into our first home. And the best part about it? The yard.
We moved onto 3/4 of an acre. I can hardly stand it! I will tell you what, it has challenged me on the concept of slow living. I have been catching myself living in Spring where I will be able to plant my long awaited garden. But this time is a gift just as much as Springtime is.
So here is what I am doing for my garden this fall:
I am making a garden plan. I am writing out what plants I want to grow, how I want to grow it, and what I want to plant with it to resemble an ecosystem.
I am composting. My mom gave me a tumble-composting bin and I am obsessed. I have read so much about them. The ones I have are from home-depot. Unfortunately they are plastic, but in this season that is what I have the time and energy for. Plus they are keeping food waste out of the landfill so that is a win in my book!
3. I am seed hunting. Looking for seeds at my local library, finding seeds on local farming/homesteading groups on Facebook, and just making a list of ones I find online.
4. I am preparing the garden beds. I have a lot of unpainted cardboard and paper bags that I will be laying out in the yard to kill the grass. I am doing this no-till style as I feel this is easiest for me and will protect the soil microbiome the best.
I am so excited to share how it goes! If you have a place and the resources, don’t forget to plant your garlic cloves! Hardneck variety for those in cold climates like Ohio. I believe in you!
Take care,
Jacqueline Marie
